1. INTRODUCTION

One example of journal policy is the preference of positive results, which may lead to publication bias phenomenon [1]. This pattern of selective data reporting results in an incomplete scientific record, and obliges research institutions to use their limited resources to replicate studies which have already been conducted [2]. This slows scientific progress, especially when the other research institutions do not have access to the results of studies that have been conducted [3]. Therefore, a mindset shift needs to happen, where the negative or undesired results aren’t considered as failure, but an essential element in any publication [4].

 

2. Curiosity Versus Competition: The True Drivers of Scientific Progress

The tension between scientific curiosity and commercial competition can slow scientific innovation and development, and in a corporate sense it can stifle genuinely valuable findings, and researchers are often expected to adhere to tight roping standards that judge their findings based on whether it is doable or not, which hinders scientific innovation [5]. However,  when researchers concentrate more on investigating the detailed formulation of more complex scientific questions rather than their marketability, then the integrity will remain intact and the results will be much more valuable to the industry and will likely come with a lot more utility in the long run [6].

 

3. Navigating Conflicting Evidence: The Objective Researcher’s Response

Critical methodological problems can occur, especially when pertaining to established theories and empirical data, or call for an objective response to data, applying this shows the refusal of the scientific community for data to be manipulated in any way for the sake of established theories, science after all is based on empirical facts, so contradictions should exist and should be thoroughly analyzed [7]. Most of the time, the data which scientists consider as contradictory, when shared and analyzed it leads to the discovery of new concealed variables, and shifts the paradigm of the field altogether, and most of the time by neglecting the deviating data and applying rigorous methods carelessly, the researchers are biasing the study, even though the most important thing is for the deviating data to be wholly and rigorously analyzed [8].

 

4. CONCLUSION

Negative results offer an opportunity for valuable knowledge in the scientific community, and results deemed unsuccessful have actually contributed to transparency in the scientific process, while publishing results that help fill in gaps can help avoid publication bias, allowing others to offer improvements or build upon the work, ultimately strengthening the integrity of science by valuing transparency and evidence over the success of the publication [1,3,4,6].
