1. INTRODUCTION
Every scientific discovery, even the most groundbreaking, always starts with a question, and the first thing a scientist must do to make a discovery is figure out their curiosity and focus it in a direction [1]. Sometimes, discoveries even stem from casual minuscule moments questioning the hows and whys of the world; the first question is a critical step towards observation and investigation, but most importantly the formation of new knowledge [2]. Most research is focused on methods of the study and the results that come from this; in reality, the original question is the shape and focus of the entire journey of the study [3]. A well-formed clever question can make even the most casual study and research groundbreaking in its contribution to the field [4].
2. THE POWER OF ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS
An effective research question directs a study and helps the researcher determine which information to gather; the focused and pertinent question aids the selection of study design, analysis of results, and refinement of conclusions [1]. Well-thought-out productive research does not necessarily stem from elaborate ideas, but from researchers who notice something odd, challenge the status quo, and rigorously investigate their hypothesis [3]. While such research does not always originate from curiosity alone, researchers who remain curious about the odd and unexplained are more likely to make and report scientific discoveries [5].
3. FROM CURIOSITY TO SCIENTIFIC IMPACT
The past demonstrates the impact that asking simple questions can have on the progression of certain industries, such as medicine, technology, and even recreational pastimes [6]. For example, in medical research, the question "why do some patients react differently to the same medical treatment?" has caused the creation of more individualized medical treatment [7]. There are countless examples in engineering, psychology, and environmental research. Not every question can potentially have a global impact, but the most important research often starts with a simple, straightforward question worth considering [4]. The most important part of the research is the question that is being asked; the first step of the process is having the audacity to ask the question [3].
4. CONCLUSION
Every significant scientific journey begins with a question. While research methods, tools and analysis are essential and they all depend on the question that guides the study. The clear and well formulated question shapes the direction of research and leads to meaningful discoveries. Ultimately, the ability to ask the right question transforms curiosity into knowledge and gives research its purpose and lasting impact.
