1. INTRODUCTION

Identifying a genuine research gap is fundamental, yet novice researchers often mistake their inability to locate relevant literature for an absolute absence of existing knowledge, a phenomenon related to what Sandberg and Alvesson (2011) critique as "gap-spotting". This pitfall, stemming from superficial searches and limited database literacy, leads to redundant studies. It remains crucial for academic rigor to distinguish between a true knowledge gap and a mere personal failure in the literature review process (Booth et al., 2021).

2. THE ILLUSION OF ABSENCE: PITFALLS IN LITERATURE SEARCHING

The primary catalyst for this pitfall is a deficient search strategy. Beginners rely heavily on simplistic keyword queries, overlooking complex database architecture, synonyms, and cross-disciplinary terminology. This lack of integration of systematic search techniques, such as Boolean operators, creates a false sense of discovery (Booth et al., 2021). Without comprehensive searches, researchers wrongly conclude a topic is unexplored, as fundamental studies remain hidden behind poor querying (Kitchenham & Charters, 2007). Consequently, this leads to research that does not offer meaningful additions to existing scientific consensus.

3. VERIFICATION STRATEGIES: DISTINGUISHING GAPS FROM FAILURES

To avoid this, researchers must elevate their approach through critical problematization and rigorous analysis of high-quality, systematic reviews. Validating an authentic knowledge deficit requires studying the limitations and future research directions sections in top-tier journal articles (Miles, 2017). By systematically tracking scholarly recommendations and expanding keyword matrices, beginners can confidently distinguish overlooked areas from personal oversights (Alvesson & Sandberg, 2011). Moving beyond the "gap-spotting" mindset to a more problematized approach ensures that studies address genuine, unexplored domains, thereby enhancing the rigor and originality of the research.

 

4. CONCLUSION

Identifying a genuine research gap requires more than the absence of easily accessible literature; it demands systematic searching, critical evaluation, and thoughtful problematization. Novice researchers should recognize that unsuccessful literature retrieval often reflects limitations in search strategies rather than a true lack of existing knowledge. By adopting rigorous review methods and refining search techniques, researchers can produce more original, credible, and meaningful contributions to scientific knowledge.
