1. INTRODUCTION

 

Critical thinking is the ability to analyze information logically, evaluate evidence, and question assumptions before making conclusions. It plays a significant role in shaping the scientific identity of researchers by helping them approach knowledge in an objective and reflective way. Scientific identity refers to the values and professional behaviors that define how researchers engage with scientific work. This article examines how critical thinking supports scientific analysis and contributes to developing a responsible and independent scientific identity.

2. THE ROLE OF CRITICAL THINKING IN SCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS

Researchers who think critically analyze scientific information by carefully evaluating evidence, questioning assumptions, and considering alternative explanations before reaching conclusions. Instead of accepting research findings without evaluation, they examine the quality of the evidence, name limitations in the research design, and compare different interpretations to ensure objective and reliable conclusions. For example, when reviewing a scientific study, a researcher may evaluate whether the sample size is adequate, assess the suitability of the statistical methods, and reconsider the method if the findings appear inconsistent. This systematic approach reduces bias and improves the accuracy and credibility of scientific research. According to Ennis (2021) and Facione and Gittens (2021), critical thinking involves analyzing evidence, evaluating arguments, questioning assumptions, and making reasoned judgments to support sound scientific decision-making. These perspectives prove that critical thinking strengthens scientific analysis and contributes to more reliable and credible research outcomes.

3. CURIOSITY AS A DRIVER OF INNOVATION

Critical thinking also plays an essential role in shaping a researcher’s scientific identity. By continuously evaluating evidence, reflecting on research practices, and making objective decisions, researchers develop professional values based on intellectual responsibility, integrity, and independent thinking. These qualities encourage openness to new evidence, ethical decision-making, and the willingness to revise conclusions when stronger evidence becomes available. For example, when research findings differ from first expectations, a critical thinker objectively re-evaluates the method rather than ignoring contradictory results. Halpern (2022) emphasizes that critical thinking strengthens reasoning, reflective judgment, and evidence-based decision-making, which are fundamental characteristics of a credible scientific identity. As a result, researchers become more capable of contributing reliable knowledge and supporting high ethical standards within the academic community.

4. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, critical thinking is a fundamental skill that enhances both scientific analysis and the development of a researcher’s scientific identity. Through objective evaluation of evidence, reflective thinking, and reasoned decision-making, researchers produce more accurate, reliable, and trustworthy scientific knowledge. These competencies improve the quality of research, strengthen ethical responsibility, and support meaningful contributions to the academic community. Therefore, developing critical thinking skills is essential for advancing scientific knowledge and maintaining excellence in scientific research.
